Collections
Residents receive weekly garbage and bi-weekly recycling collection, which includes large appliances and scrap metal, automotive batteries, waste oil, antifreeze, paint and brush. 

Garbage and recycling must be at the curb no later than 7:00 am on collection days. For more information view the Local Law Chapter 181: Solid Waste Management.

 
Recycling in Tonawanda
In its ongoing efforts to go green, the Town of Tonawanda is always striving to be conscious of the environment, especially when it comes to household waste disposal. In years past, the common practice of disposal would be to dump into a landfill. However, through the years, it's been proven that landfills produce a methane gas, which has contributed to vast global warning. 

The latest, more environmentally-friendly process the Town of Tonawanda uses is to take the waste to a facility where it is burned and is eventually turned into electricity.

Guidelines
  • Address totes with black permanent markers.
  • Your tote must be used for all food waste.
  • Filled totes should weigh no more than manufacturer recommendations.
  • Do not put any garbage to the curb more than 24 hours prior to scheduled collection.
  • All empty totes must be removed from the curb by the end of the collection day.
  • Keep the tote stored behind the building line.
  • Tote lids should always be kept closed.
  • Totes must be kept clean.
  • Totes may be traded for alternate sizes (65 gallons or 95 gallons).
Clear plastic bags may be placed at curbside for yard waste. Any materials placed in garbage cans (plastic or steel) will not be collected. For more information, contact the Highway Department at (716) 875-8822.

Garbage Tote Repair

Did you know that damaged totes may be fixed or, depending on the damage, replaced with no additional charges to the homeowner?

In order to have your damaged tote fixed or replaced, simply call the Town of Tonawanda Highway Department’s Sanitation Line at (716) 875-8822 and give us your name and address and we’ll be happy to accommodate you.

Additional totes may be purchased by submitting a form to the Town of Tonawanda Clerk’s Office, located at 2919 Delaware Avenue, Room 14, Kenmore, New York 14217 (716) 877-8800. Order forms are available on-line as well.

As of September 2017, the Town officially converted to recycling totes. Collection is every other week, as oppose to the previous weekly schedule. Collection is based on a yellow and blue schedule. Information regarding all things recycling can be found below:
