The town clerk's office is responsible for the collection of property taxes in the Town of Tonawanda and the Village of Kenmore. Taxes can be paid in the following ways:
- Checks payable to: "Tonawanda Town Clerk"
- By check or cash at the Town Clerk's office during business hours.
- By check and mailed in the yellow envelope provided with the bill. (These payments go directly to the bank for processing.)
- By check, mailed to: Town Clerk, 2919 Delaware Ave. Rm. 14, Kenmore, NY, 14217.
- Drop-box available on Delaware Rd. side of the Municipal Building (24/7).
- Online by Credit Card (VISA, MasterCard and Discover) and ACH/e-check payments. A payment button is offered once you locate your tax bill. A convenience fee is assessed by the bank for this service.
Payments by Mail
Only U.S. Postal marks are accepted as payment date. Meter marks are not accepted. Mail bearing other than U.S. Postal marks are considered paid the day they are received. If you are paying your bill close to the due date, make sure you take it into the post office and have it properly postmarked.
Night Depository (Drop-box)
The town maintains a drop-box on the Delaware Rd. side of the Municipal Building which is available (24/7) for tax payments (checks only). Penalty deadlines will also be strictly adhered to when using the drop-box. Access will not be available at midnight during these times.
Town & County Tax Bills
Sent out each year by mid-January and due on or about February 15th (See current bill for exact due dates). Tax bills paid after the due date are assessed penalties. The town clerk's office generally collects these payments thru June 30th each year.
School Tax Bills
Sent out each year by mid-September and are due on or about October 15th (See current bill for exact due date). Tax bills paid after the due date are assessed penalties. The town clerk's office generally collects these payments thru November 30th each year.
After the due dates, penalties are assessed according to Erie County Tax Act and NYS Real Property Tax Law Sec 925. There is no provision for the waiver of penalties. The penalty schedule is located on the front of the tax bills. In the event that a check is returned by the bank, for whatever reason, the payment date of the account may be affected and penalties also may be applied.
Partial Payment of Taxes
It is important that the taxpayer understand the rules that apply when choosing to make partial payments. In order to make partial payments on tax bills, there must be no prior year taxes due on the property. You may make as many partial payments as you choose to the town during the active collection cycle. If electing to make partial payments please note that penalties will apply to all unpaid balances after February 15th or October 15th. Please read the back of your tax bill for information on the penalty schedules.
If you no longer own a piece of property but received a tax bill, please try to forward the bill to the new owner in a timely manner or contact the town clerk's office immediately and we will try to locate the new owner.
According to New York State Real Property Tax Law, property owners are responsible for all taxes, whether or not they receive a bill. If you do not receive a bill, contact the town clerk's office at (716) 877-8800 ext. 810 as soon as possible. The tax office is open Monday-Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. except legal holidays.
