Obtaining a Marriage Licenses
Marriage licenses may be obtained in the Office of the Town Clerk on Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Applicants must appear in person and both the couple must sign the application for a marriage license.  A representative may not apply for a marriage license on behalf of a prospective couple and notarized marriage license affidavits may not be substituted for personal appearance of the bride and/or groom. Proof of age and identity are required.

Proof of Age and Identity
A person is required to establish proof of age and identity by submitting original or certified copies to the issuing clerk, with one of the following age related documents:

1. Birth Certificate - government issued with raised-seal, showing both parents names and translated to English if in foreign language.
2. Baptismal record (with raised seal) showing both parents names - baptism must have taken place within one year of birth.
3. Naturalization record - original only
4. Census record - certified copy only

AND one of the following identity related documents:

1. Driver's license
2. Passport
3. Employment picture ID
4. Immigration record

24 Hour Solemnization Period
Once a license is issued there is a 24 hour solemnization period before the license becomes valid. A license is valid for 60 days after the solemnization period has expired and may be used at any time during the 60 day period.

You must have a valid license to be legally married in New York State.

Previous Marriages
If you've been married before, information regarding previous marriages must be furnished in the application for a marriage license.  This includes whether the former spouse or spouses are living and whether the applicants are divorced persons.  If they are divorced, this includes when, where and against whom the divorce or divorces were granted.  A certified copy of the Decree of Divorce or a Certificate of Dissolution of Marriage is required by the clerk issuing the marriage license.

The cost of the marriage license is $40. If an additional certificate of marriage registration is needed, the cost is $10. The latter is automatically sent by the clerk to the applicants within 15 days after the completed license is returned by the officiant. It serves as a notice that a record of the marriage is on file. Couples who do not receive a certificate of marriage registration within four weeks of the wedding should contact the town clerk's office.

If in the future you need a certified copy of your marriage license, that was originally obtained at the town clerk's office, the cost is $10 accompanied by a completed request application.
